Cambodia had no monetary system 1975-1980, that's another story.
It's dual currency now and it works like this:

USD or KHR (Riel "real"), choose either from ATM machines.
$100 smallest bill from an ATM, useless just about everwhere.
Prices quoted USD, shops, restaurants, hotels, taxi etc.
Change from < $100 USD purchases come in Riel.
No one likes credit cards but Visa works in Hotels, Minimarkets, rarely Restaurants.
USD = KHR 4,000 Riel unless a calculator appears.
USD notes must look brand new, unsure why.
Nasty 5% charge at ATM machine
Always travel with both currencies
Amount illustrated is £10
Dump all remaining Riel at the Airport Exchange on your way out, it's wallpaper outside Cambodia.
