Money, it's a hit

Cambodia had no monetary system 1975-1980, that's another story.

It's dual currency now and it works like this:

  • USD or KHR (Riel "real"), choose either from ATM machines.

  • $100 smallest bill from an ATM, useless just about everwhere.

  • Prices quoted USD, shops, restaurants, hotels, taxi etc.

  • Change from < $100 USD purchases come in Riel.

  • No one likes credit cards but Visa works in Hotels, Minimarkets, rarely Restaurants.

  • USD = KHR 4,000 Riel unless a calculator appears.

  • USD notes must look brand new, unsure why.

  • Nasty 5% charge at ATM machine

  • Always travel with both currencies

Amount illustrated is £10

Dump all remaining Riel at the Airport Exchange on your way out, it's wallpaper outside Cambodia.
